Are you still planning or are you updating yet?

The first quarter is almost over and the end of support for the SAP Solution Manager 7.1 is coming closer.

Now, it is the right time dealing with introducing the new SolMan 7.2!

Many customers have to decide which is the right way to go to integrate this system in their landscape.

Is it possible reinstalling with the „Greenfield approach“ or is it necessary upgrading the existing system in connection with the subsequent content migration?

Unfortunately, there is no general answer and it always has to be evaluated and decided individually.
However, you can be sure that you need to decide soon as both procedures must be planned in advance.

If a reinstallation has been chosen, the system migration and functions must be planned thoroughly. The migration date is a key component for each SAP landscape and the only interface to SAP. Therefore, this migration date must be well chosen to minimize downtimes.

But also, the upgrade does not only start with downloading the installation media, but much earlier.

Due to a new management structure within version 7.2, currently used projects, solutions and system components must be migrated to this new structure. This process is also described as Content Activation.

This step is mandatory for all customers using one of the following scenarios already today:

  • Business Process Monitoring (BPMon)
  • Solution Documentation
  • Change Management (ChaRM)
  • Test Management
  • Project Management

Transferring data is very time-consuming, depending on the size, and can only be performed once. Reason enough checking this step in advance thoroughly.

However, it does not matter which scenario you choose. In any case, the Solution Manager 7.2 become an essential tool for your tomorrow’s SAP Basis.
